Do I need to take SAT Subject Tests?

The new SAT has received a lot of attention lately, but little notice has been given to the decrease in popularity of the SAT Subject Tests. Fewer SAT Subject Tests are given, fewer students are taking them, and fewer universities are requiring them.

The numbers speak for themselves.

Number of SAT Subject Tests Given

  • A 25.7 percent drop between the class of 2011 and the class of 2015 (the most recent five years).

  • A 17.4 percent drop between the class of 2006 and the class of 2015 (the most recent 10 years).

Number of Students Taking SAT Subject Tests

  • A 22.6 percent drop between the class of 2011 and the class of 2015 (the most recent five years).

  • A 13.5 percent drop between the class of 2006 and the class of 2015 (the most recent 10 years).

So, do you need to take them? That answer depends on which college you are applying. Many of the more competitive universities still require them. Check the university website for the most up-to-date information.
